
The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has directed an alarming footage trending on digital platforms, which shows a group of men forcing a minor to inhale a Tobacco stick, to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service for immediate action.
In an official announcement issued on Friday, November 21, the Ministry characterized the incident as a clear case of Threat to a child’s safety, stating that Subjecting children to toxic items is both mistreating and a transgression of the child’s legal claims and dignity. Such actions is subject to penalty under the law.
As stated by the Ministry, the action violates the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), which requires the safeguarding of all children from physical damage, Mental distress, and moral harm.
It also weakens objectives in the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy, which supports the complete growth of children in safe and nurturing environments.
The Ministry Firmly criticized the conduct and advised parents, guardians, caregivers, and the public to maintain their shared duty in safeguarding children and young people from harm.
It also encouraged the law enforcement to expedite actions to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.
Besides to forwarding the issue to police authorities , the Ministry called on all interested parties, including households, chiefs and elders, faith leaders, and non governmental groups, to strengthen efforts to stop harm and protect vulnerable groups, specifically children and women, as the world near, the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
“We must all bear in mind that protecting the rights and dignity of children is a collective responsibility,” the Ministry emphasised.
