OSP Officer Gives Detailed Account of Altercation Leading to Martin Kpebu’s Arrest

An officer at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), who reportedly witnessed the confrontation that led to the arrest of lawyer Martin Kpebu, has shared a detailed account of the incident.

Speaking on JoyNews’ NewsFile on December 6, 2025, the unnamed female officer said she observed the clash from beginning to end and even joined others in trying to de-escalate the situation.

According to her, the altercation began when security personnel—whom Kpebu referred to as soldiers—cautioned him against granting media interviews after parking close to the OSP premises.

“When I was walking into the office, I noticed a media interview being done with Mr Kpebu. The officer on duty told him it was too close to the premises and asked him to move away,” she recounted.
“When he later walked in, they reminded him that any time he comes to the office, he must go straight to the reception and not engage in such activities there. His response was that he could do whatever he wanted.”

She said the disagreement quickly intensified.

“Next thing I know, it escalates to insults. The F-word was used. Other insults too,” she said, adding that she personally heard the verbal abuse from Kpebu and not from the officers.

The OSP officer strongly denied claims that Kpebu was provoked before reacting.

“These men simply insisted that what he was doing was not allowed. His response was he could do what he wanted. That’s what led to the flare-up,” she added.

Martin Kpebu’s Version of Events

Kpebu, however, offered a different account.

He said a soldier without a name tag confronted him, stating that officers had only “allowed” him to park but would not do so again on his next visit. Kpebu argued that the soldier had no authority to restrict his movements, especially since he was neither a suspect nor under investigation.

He added that another soldier shouted “you will see” at him— a phrase he interpreted as a threat in Ghanaian context.

Feeling provoked, he turned back to challenge the remark. Kpebu claimed the confrontation intensified when the soldier allegedly called him “stupid.” He admitted responding in the same manner before one of his lawyers intervened and ushered him into the building.

Kpebu said the verbal exchange was later used as the basis for his arrest.

After the incident, he was detained and transferred to a National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) facility. He was informed that he was being charged with obstruction of an OSP officer.

The private legal practitioner was released after nearly five hours in custody on December 3, 2025, following widespread public criticism.
