The Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obo-dade III, has appealed to NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah to reconsider reports suggesting that he may contest the party’s 2028 flagbearer position.
Speaking to journalists at his palace on December 7, 2025, the traditional leader noted that after the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings, the founder of the NDC, Asiedu Nketiah has naturally taken on the role of a unifying elder — which he likened to an Abusuapanyin (family head) — within the party.
According to Nana Boadi, the Abusuapanyin role places a heavy responsibility on the NDC chairman to focus on keeping the party cohesive rather than pursuing personal presidential aspirations.
He cautioned that if Asiedu Nketiah decides to enter the flagbearer contest, it could intensify internal rivalries, create factions, and ultimately undermine the NDC’s strength ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The chief urged him instead to dedicate his efforts to guiding upcoming party leaders, offering mentorship, and supporting reforms that will reinforce both the NDC and Ghana’s broader political landscape.
“I sincerely hope he does not contest the flagbearership,” Nana Boadi said. “Since President Rawlings passed on, Asiedu Nketiah has become our Abusuapanyin, the family head. And when competition starts, if the Abusuapanyin joins the contest, it can divide and destabilise the family.”
He stressed that the NDC chairman should act as the central force that binds all factions, particularly if former President John Mahama decides not to run.
“If Mahama does not contest, there will be a scramble for the position. The NDC can lose 2028 if it allows itself to break apart. I wish Asiedu Nketiah would serve as the glue that unites all competing interests,” he concluded.
