President John Dramani Mahama declared Ghana’s intention to work with the Portuguese government to revive a national airline in a new effort to support the country’s aviation and economic sectors.

He made this statement at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 10, where he received letters of credence from five newly appointed ambassadors, including Maria Da Conceição de Sousa Pilar, the new Portuguese ambassador to Ghana.

Additionally, the ambassadors from the Seychelles, Venezuela, Chad, and Gabon gave their credentials.

Speaking to the Portuguese ambassador, President Mahama stressed the value of deepening bilateral ties with Portugal, especially in the areas of trade, foreign direct investment, and aviation.

We appreciate the fact that the Portuguese national airline flies directly to Accra,” President Mahama said.

“Ghana itself is trying to reestablish its national airline. At the appropriate time, we will be looking for partners, and if the Portuguese national airline is interested, we could do a partnership.

The President’s comments coincide with larger government initiatives to improve Ghana’s logistics and transportation network while opening up new opportunities for economic growth and employment development.

President Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s potential as an investment destination and restated his administration’s commitment to developing strong economic ties with Portugal and other international partners.

We want to expand economic relations, and we believe that we can attract more investors to come and invest in Ghana. Ghana has a lot of natural resources, with a market size of almost 35 million people,” he added.

The presentation of credentials marks the formal start of diplomatic assignments for the newly appointed ambassadors, who are expected to promote stronger cooperation between their home countries and Ghana in various sectors.
