Mavis Hawa Koomson, the former minister of fisheries and aquaculture development, has stated that during the recent rerun of the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North district, she was physically attacked by thugs believed to be associated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former Awutu Senya West MP referred to her attackers as “NDC machomen” in a Facebook post, saying they attacked her as she was calmly watching events at one of the polling places.

“I wish to inform the general public that while peacefully observing the ongoing election rerun in Ablekuma North Constituency, I was physically assaulted by NDC machomen. During this unfortunate incident, my personal mobile phone was forcibly taken.

As a result, any calls, messages, social media posts, or broadcasts originating from my number from the time of incidence onwards should be treated as unauthorized

and not from me. I kindly urge everyone to disregard any such communication until I regain full control of my digital platforms.”

Before police intervened, video showed the former Awutu Senya East MP being flung to the ground and allegedly trampled in the chest and crotch region by unidentified men.

The former Member of Parliament was among the political figures attacked by the attackers, who reportedly overran the security detail at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church voting station.

Since the allocated police officers lacked riot control equipment and were unarmed, the incident has generated a lot of debate over the effectiveness of security forces utilized during elections.
