Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Explains Her Decision
Declining a Ministerial Role
Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, the Deputy Majority Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada, has explained why she declined a ministerial position in President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, emphasising that she has always preferred to serve in parliamentary leadership over the executive branch.
In an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, she clarified that she made a conscious decision based on her knowledge of the influence and power relationships inside the governance system.
Influence in Parliament
“Why weren’t you appointed a minister when people started crying? Their inability to distinguish between the two makes me laugh.
“When you are a leader in the House, all the MP-ministers, when they enter the chamber, are under you,” citinewsroom.com quoted her to have said during the interview.
Cudjoe emphasised that she has considerable control and supervision over ministers who address Parliament because of her front-bench role as Deputy Majority Whip.
“I don’t know why they say I should leave the front bench and go and be a minister and come and sit behind a leader in the chamber. Let me be in the front,” she added.
“All the ministers that come to the chamber, if I turn to them and say I need this, I get it done.”
Past Experience as a Minister
The Ada MP disclosed that she had been a minister before, but she turned down opportunities to rejoin the executive because she felt more influential in her current position.
“I have been a minister before. Unless he [President Mahama] says with your specialities, I have seen you can do this for me, but not to just ask me, do you want it? I will say no,” she stated.
She added, “I was asked several times, but I said no. I told my party. I told my leadership. When we won power, all of them said they wanted to be ministers. I told them I want to be a leader.”
