The Incident at the Asantehemaa’s Funeral

The ‘Igbo king’ of Ghana, Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, has been ridiculed by some social media users for allegedly failing to shake hands with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, at the funeral service of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Eze Ihenetu, who recently caused a stir for reportedly trying to create a monarchy in Ghana, was apprehended with his group on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in honour of the late queen mother.

The ‘Igbo king’ and his entourage showed up at the funeral grounds to offer condolences to the Asantehene in a widely shared video.

Customary Protocols at Manhyia

Baffour Kantankrakye, Otumfuo’s linguist (kyeame), and other traditional leaders guided mourners and guests while Otumfuo sat and received greetings.

As part of customary rituals, the entourage was requested to take off their hats and honour the Asantehene without shaking his hand.

Videos that surfaced online after the event showed Eze Ihenetu clearly displeased with the circumstances, which sparked a contentious discussion on social media.
