Dr. Frank Serebour, President of the Ghana Medical Association, stresses that the fight against galamsey requires political accountability. He urges Ghanaians to use the ballot box as the strongest weapon for lasting change.

GMA President Calls for Political Pressure

Dr. Frank Serebour, president of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has urged Ghanaians to hold politicians responsible in the fight against illegal mining, or galamsey, by using the voting booth.

He clarified that in order to protect public health and lessen the burden of avoidable diseases, the GMA has joined the battle against galamsey.

Galamsey Still a Widespread Challenge

Dr. Serebour pointed out that galamsey is still common in many communities and maintained that the most long-term solution is political pressure rather than strike action.

Interview with Citi News

In an interview with Citi News on Thursday, September 18, 2025, he stated that the GMA will step up public mobilisation and advocacy to pressure government leaders to take tangible action.

Strikes Not a Lasting Solution

“When the GMA asked political parties to declare their positions and sign a pact, we wanted clarity on where they stand. Some called for strike action, but strikes aren’t sustainable.

The only consequence politicians fear is electoral loss. My message is: if you don’t fight it, we’ll boot you out,” he said.

Advocacy to Continue

He also emphasised that strikes by themselves cannot result in lasting change, even though the GMA will keep issuing demands and advocating for improvements.
