South Dayi MP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team member Rockson-Nelson Dateamekpor has called on party supporters to remain calm and law-abiding following a court ruling that went against the party, stressing that the legal process is far from over.
Speaking after the decision, Dateamekpor said the NDC respects the authority of the court and will advise its candidates appropriately once the full ruling is made available.
“We are guided by this decision, and therefore we will advise our candidates on the next steps to take,” he stated.
Questions Over Key Documents
Despite acknowledging the ruling, the lawmaker raised concerns about the basis of the case, arguing that the court ought to rely on the gazette notification published by the Assembly Press, rather than documents from the Electoral Commission presented in Parliament.
According to him, the gazette notification is a public and legally binding document, which cannot be conveniently dismissed after benefiting the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“The NPP cannot benefit from that gazette notification and later come to court to claim it is not the proper document,” he stressed.
Accusations of Double Standards
Dateamekpor also accused the NPP of inconsistency in its attitude toward the judiciary, noting that the party criticises the courts when rulings go against them but praises the same courts when decisions are favourable.
“When the Tamale court ruled in our favour, they called it a kangaroo court. Today, because the ruling favours them, they are celebrating the judiciary,” he said.
Call for Calm and Peace
Despite the disappointment, Dateamekpor insisted that the NDC will not resort to agitation or unrest, reaffirming the party’s commitment to lawful processes.
“But we are law-abiding,” he added.
He specifically appealed to party members and supporters, particularly in Kpandai, to remain calm and maintain peace.
“We want to urge our team members and supporters, both here and in Kpandai, to stay calm,” he said.
Legal Options Still Open
Dateamekpor revealed that the court is expected to release the full ruling by February 6, after which the NDC will obtain a certified true copy for detailed review.
“This is not the end. When the ruling is available and we study the certified copy, we will decide on the next course of action,” he explained.
He further disclosed that the party still has legal remedies available, including the option of applying for a review.
“There is a review option. This matter is not ended,” he emphasised.
