Afenyo-Markin explains why Kennedy Agyapong dominated Effutu in NPP primaries

The Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has explained the factors behind the overwhelming victory of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong in the Effutu Constituency during the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026, Afenyo-Markin traced Agyapong’s strong performance to years of consistent financial support, personal sacrifice, and development projects undertaken in Winneba and its surrounding communities.

“Kennedy has been very helpful to Winneba”

Kennedy Agyapong secured 644 votes in Effutu, far ahead of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who polled 79 votes.

The results sparked public debate, with some observers suggesting that Afenyo-Markin may have influenced the outcome, despite not openly campaigning for Agyapong.

However, the Minority Leader dismissed those claims, insisting that the outcome reflected long-standing goodwill rather than political manoeuvring.

“You know the numbers and some of your colleagues are in a mischief mood. It is no news that Kennedy won in Winneba. He is my friend. Don’t waste your time on this matter. The gentleman has been very helpful to the people of Winneba,” he stated.

Years of support and development projects

Afenyo-Markin recalled several instances of Agyapong’s involvement in community development, dating back more than a decade.

According to him, during the 2012 elections, Agyapong travelled from Assin to Winneba to provide funds for a clean-up exercise on election day. He further revealed that in 2013, when the NPP was in opposition, Agyapong supplied 22 brand-new taxis under a work-and-pay arrangement to support livelihoods in the constituency.

He added that Agyapong also provided a tractor for rural farming activities and outboard motors to assist fishermen along the coast.

“It was not free; it was work and pay, and I paid. But the relationship started long ago,” he explained.

“He gave me $5 million without any agreement”

Beyond politics, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the depth of his personal relationship with Agyapong, revealing that the former lawmaker once invested $5 million into his business without signing any formal agreement.

“When my business ran down, Kennedy gave me $5 million. We did not sign any agreement. He simply said we are businessmen. That was a risk he took on me,” he disclosed.

He also noted that the two share family ties, explaining that his great-grandfather migrated from Effutu to Assin to establish a cocoa farm.

ICT project to be named after Agyapong

The Effutu MP further revealed that a major ICT facility currently under construction at Osubonpanyin would be named after Kennedy Agyapong in recognition of his contributions.

According to him, the project was conceived about five years ago and forms part of broader efforts to equip young people in the constituency with digital skills.

He added that in 2018, Agyapong again supported youth empowerment by guaranteeing the acquisition of Suzuki vehicles under another work-and-pay scheme.

“So, it is a relationship we have. I do not expect anyone to suggest that I should cut ties with him. That would not be right. We are more than family; there is history between us. People should stop reading meaning into the primary results. We have moved past that,” Afenyo-Markin concluded.
