Tensions flared in Ghana’s Parliament on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, following a heated confrontation between the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, and the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, during plenary proceedings.
The standoff began when Assafuah attempted to pose supplementary questions to a sector minister. His efforts were repeatedly halted by Deputy Speaker Ahiafor, who was presiding over the House at the time.
Visibly frustrated, Assafuah accused the Deputy Speaker of acting unfairly and being disrespectful to members of the Minority, remarks that quickly escalated into a verbal exchange that disrupted proceedings in the Parliament of Ghana.
“Mr Speaker, you are trying to get evasive with these questions. Ghanaians are watching. This is not fair,” Assafuah protested.
“You are seeing how unfair you are. And if you disrespect us, we are likely to disrespect you as well. We are Members of Parliament; we have every right to speak.”
The comments drew a sharp response from Deputy Speaker Ahiafor, who described Assafuah’s conduct as disorderly and ordered him to resume his seat. He further warned that parliamentary marshals could be called to escort the MP out of the chamber if he continued to defy the Chair.
“Your conduct is becoming disorderly; I can ask the marshals to walk you out,” Ahiafor cautioned.
The confrontation stemmed from Assafuah’s insistence on asking three supplementary questions arising from the minister’s initial responses. Ahiafor, however, ruled the questions inadmissible, particularly when the MP attempted to cite a Facebook post as supporting evidence.
Although Assafuah later withdrew his description of the Deputy Speaker as “unfair,” he continued to challenge the ruling, resulting in a prolonged back-and-forth before order was gradually restored in the House.
