Paul Adom-Otchere condemns Asiedu Nketiah over remarks about Nana Konadu Rawlings

Ghanaian media personality and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has strongly criticised the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, over remarks he made about the late Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

Asiedu Nketiah made the comments during a campaign rally in Nima ahead of the Ayawaso East by-election, where he criticised former party stalwart Mohammed Umar Sanda for contesting the election as an independent candidate.

In cautioning Sanda against leaving the party, the NDC Chairman referenced the political exit of Nana Konadu Rawlings, wife of the late NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings, arguing that her departure did not lead to the collapse of the party.

“Our late father Rawlings who brought the party, his wife decided to form her own party. She herself left, so the one who brought the party even left and the party didn’t collapse. So you in Nima, what makes you think that leaving the party will collapse it?” Asiedu Nketiah stated.

However, the remarks sparked sharp criticism from Adom-Otchere, who described them as disrespectful and unnecessary.

Speaking on his television programme, Good Evening Ghana, on February 27, 2026, Adom-Otchere called on Asiedu Nketiah to retract the statement and show respect to the legacy of the late former First Lady.

“What worried me was the reference to Mrs Rawlings. It was so unnecessary and even derogatory. This is a woman who spent the best part of her adult life establishing a party that you, Johnson, benefit from. And now that she has passed, this is what you say about her,” he said.

Adom-Otchere further praised Nana Konadu Rawlings for what he described as her strong principles and moral stance, noting that her decision to leave the NDC was driven by concerns about vote buying, manipulation and intimidation during internal party contests.

According to him, these practices ran contrary to the ideals Nana Konadu stood for, which were rooted in the original NDC values of probity and accountability.

He stressed that many Ghanaians continue to hold Nana Konadu Rawlings in high regard for her contributions and integrity, and therefore her memory should not be diminished for political convenience.

“I am not a member of the NDC, but I admire Mrs Rawlings for the work she did and the principles she stood for. These were the very issues—vote buying, manipulation and intimidation—that drove her away from the party. She came from the unadulterated NDC of probity and accountability,” Adom-Otchere added.
