The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has accepted an apology from the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, following allegations of corruption linked to the ongoing recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
The apology was delivered during parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Before accepting the apology, the Interior Minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Asawase, expressed how deeply the accusations had affected him.
According to him, being wrongly accused of corruption and wrongdoing was painful, especially when such claims question one’s integrity and public service.
“It is painful to be wrongly accused or for your actions to be misconstrued and labelled differently from the intention you have, especially when it is associated with criminality and serious wrongdoing,” he told Parliament.
Despite his disappointment, Muntaka said he had no choice but to forgive the Effutu MP after he withdrew the allegations and apologised.
He emphasised that throughout his long parliamentary career, he has always advocated for respect among lawmakers even when they disagree.
“I have had the privilege of serving in leadership in this House for a long time. I will be the last person to undermine leadership efforts in running this House,” he stated.
He further urged Members of Parliament to criticise issues constructively without attempting to destroy one another’s reputations.
“Fight for the right thing to be done and ensure wrong things are corrected, but let’s not do it as though we intend to destroy each other,” he said.
Muntaka admitted that the allegations had left him “heavily hurt and worried,” but stressed that forgiveness was necessary once an apology had been rendered.
