Chairman Wontumi Apologises to Mahama, Calls for Peaceful Handover to Bawumia

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has publicly appealed to President John Dramani Mahama for forgiveness over any past remarks or actions that may have offended him.

According to Chairman Wontumi, his earlier criticisms of Mahama were driven purely by party loyalty and political campaigning, long before Mahama assumed the presidency.

In an exclusive interview with 1957 News, Wontumi explained that as a committed party figure, he was obligated to vigorously defend and promote the NPP during election periods, even if that meant making harsh political statements.

“If I meet Mahama today, he is our President,” Wontumi said. “At the time he was contesting, I was working for my party. But now that he is President, what I will tell him is that just as Akufo-Addo handed over power peacefully to him, he should also hand over to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia when the time comes.”

He stressed that Ghana’s democratic stability depends on peaceful transitions of power and cited former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s smooth handover as an example Mahama should emulate.

Chairman Wontumi also acknowledged that political discourse can sometimes cross lines and admitted the importance of humility and reconciliation.

“As human beings, we are not above apologising,” he stated. “If I have offended President Mahama in any way—whether knowingly or unknowingly—I am not too big to ask for forgiveness. If I did anything wrong, I say I am sorry.”

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has also announced his intention to contest for the position of NPP National Chairman.

He said his decision is motivated by a desire to serve the party at a higher level and to help reposition the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections.
