Charlotte Osei Reacts to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s Claim on Ibrahim Mahama and 2016 Election Results
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s Allegation
Former Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recently claimed that businessman Ibrahim Mahama was involved in the publishing of the 2016 presidential election results.
In an interview with Kessben FM in Accra on Friday, September 5, 2025, he alleged that then-EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei deliberately postponed the official announcement of the results.
According to him, the Electoral Commission only released the results confirming Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s victory after chiefs, pastors, and businessman Ibrahim Mahama intervened.
Charlotte Osei’s Response
In response, former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Charlotte Osei reacted strongly on social media.
She posted a news article that quoted Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s claim that Ibrahim Mahama obstructed the release of the findings.
“Eight years later… and the lies continue unabated!” she commented, dismissing the allegations.
The headline she shared read: “Ibrahim Mahama intervened in release of 2016 presidential election results – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.”
Alleged Systematic Hacking
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu claimed that the EC cited a supposed “systematic hack” as the reason for delaying the results, but he dismissed this as questionable.
He maintained that the delay in releasing the results created unnecessary nationwide tension and political stress.
According to him, the EC, under Charlotte Osei’s leadership, risked the nation’s peace by dragging its feet.
Comparing Cases
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further cautioned against comparing the present controversy involving Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to Charlotte Osei’s dismissal.
He argued that “it is like mixing apples with oranges,” insisting the two situations are unrelated.
