Dr. Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama over illegal mining (galamsey), warning that it is destroying rivers like the Ayensu and endangering the health of Ghanaians.

President John Dramani Mahama has come under fire from Dr. Cadman Atta Mills, the brother of the late former President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, for the nation’s efforts to combat illegal mining, or galamsey.

Dr. Atta Mills made the argument that galamsey is killing Ghanaians and needs to be stopped immediately in a post that was uploaded on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

He said that the economic prosperity experienced during the eight months of the John Dramani Mahama administration could not be exchanged for the health of Ghanaians.

“I REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE ACCOLADES PRESIDENT MAHAMA AND THE NDC ARE RECEIVING FOR THE CEDI’S RECOVERY WITH MY HEALTH OR LIFE.

“Call it galamsey or ‘legal’ small-scale mining (when bankrolled by the politically connected). It is killing us,” he wrote.

A video that showed a body of water severely contaminated by galamsey activities was included in the post.

According to the man filming, the body of water was the Ayensu River, which supplies water to his community and many others.

“This is the Ayensu River, this is the water we all drink.

This is a river that feeds a lot of Ghanaians but because of the selfishness of a few, look at what it has turned into,” the man lamented as he fetched and poured out some of the water from the river.
