The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, suffered defeat in the highly anticipated New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, as former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia once again emerged victorious.
Following the declaration of results, Kennedy Agyapong swiftly conceded defeat, congratulated Dr Bawumia, and pledged his full support as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
However, beyond the overall outcome, several developments during the primaries stood out—events that may have come as genuine surprises to the outspoken Assin Central lawmaker.
1. Stephen Amoah Loses Home Advantage for Kennedy
One of the biggest shocks came from Nhyieso Constituency, represented in Parliament by Stephen Amoah, popularly known as Sticka. Amoah had been a vocal and visible supporter of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign.
Despite this strong backing, Kennedy failed to secure victory in the constituency.
Nhyieso Constituency Results:
-
Kennedy Agyapong – 321
-
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – 379
-
Bryan Acheampong – 91
-
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 4
-
Kwabena Agyapong – 0
The outcome defied expectations, especially considering Amoah’s active involvement in Kennedy’s campaign.
2. Failed Prophecy Shocks Supporters
Another major talking point was the failed prophecy by Prophet Elbernard Nelson-Eshun, Founder and General Overseer of Spirit Life Revival Ministries.
Ahead of the primaries, the prophet had repeatedly predicted Kennedy Agyapong’s victory, claiming divine revelation. He even told Kennedy directly that the ballot number he picked would reflect his final position.
However, the prophecy did not materialise, as Dr Bawumia decisively won the contest—casting doubt on the prophetic declarations that had gained wide attention before the election.
3. Landslide Victory in Effutu Defies Expectations
While Kennedy lost ground in some areas, he recorded a surprising landslide victory in Effutu Constituency, represented by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Effutu Constituency Results:
-
Kennedy Agyapong – 644
-
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – 79
-
Bryan Acheampong – 32
-
Kwabena Agyapong – 2
-
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 0
The overwhelming margin was unexpected and stood in sharp contrast to Kennedy’s struggles in other constituencies.
4. Bryan Acheampong’s Strong National Showing
Dr Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, also emerged as a major surprise factor. In the Volta Region, where Kennedy Agyapong had previously dominated in 2023, Bryan Acheampong significantly eroded Kennedy’s support.
Nationally, Bryan Acheampong secured over 18% of the total valid votes cast, overtaking Kennedy’s earlier regional dominance and solidifying himself as a major force within the party.
Final Results Breakdown
-
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – 110,645 votes (56.48%)
-
Kennedy Agyapong – 46,554 votes (23.76%)
-
Dr Bryan Acheampong – 36,303 votes (18.53%)
-
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – 1,999 votes (1.02%)
-
Kwabena Agyapong – 402 votes (0.21%)
More than 211,000 delegates voted across over 300 polling centres nationwide, marking one of the most competitive and closely watched presidential primaries in the party’s history.
Dr Bawumia now leads the NPP into the 2028 general elections, as the party begins the task of unifying its base after a keenly contested internal race.
