Ghana summons Russian Ambassador over alleged release of intimate images of Ghanaian women

The Government of Ghana has summoned the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov, over reports that a man claiming to be Russian unlawfully published sexually explicit images of Ghanaian women without their consent.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the government said the summons was done on the direct instruction of the Foreign Affairs Minister to formally convey Ghana’s strong protest over the matter.

Government condemns alleged violation of privacy

According to the Ministry, the alleged conduct represents a serious breach of Ghanaian laws and a grave violation of the privacy, dignity, and human rights of the affected women.

The government further indicated that it is seeking the cooperation of Russian authorities to ensure the individual involved is identified, apprehended, and made to face justice.

Russia pledges cooperation

At the meeting, Ambassador Berdnikov reportedly acknowledged the gravity of the situation, particularly its wider cybercrime implications, and expressed the willingness of the Russian Federation to cooperate fully with Ghanaian authorities in ongoing investigations.

However, the Ambassador noted that he could not independently confirm the Russian nationality of the individual at the centre of the viral videos.

Identity and nationality questioned

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ambassador Berdnikov disclosed that the name circulating in the media as belonging to the suspect is not a recognised Russian name and is instead considered an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.

He further revealed that similar activities allegedly linked to the same individual in other countries had previously come to the attention of Russian authorities and were currently under investigation by relevant experts.

Ghana to pursue all legal options

Despite the absence of a formal extradition treaty between Ghana and Russia, the Ambassador pledged that the Russian Embassy in Accra is prepared to share information that could support Ghana’s efforts to track down and prosecute the individual.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured the public that Ghana will continue to leverage its longstanding diplomatic relations with Russia while exploring all available international legal mechanisms to ensure accountability and protect victims of cyber exploitation.
