Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, has given firm assurances to the Minority Caucus that the government will not go beyond its stated target of appointing 60 ministers.
Addressing the House during Friday’s sitting of the Parliament of Ghana, Ayariga said the administration remains fully committed to the promise it made while in opposition to keep the size of government lean.
He dismissed concerns raised by the Minority, accusing them of harbouring what he described as “diabolic intentions” to politicise the matter should the number of ministers exceed the agreed ceiling.
According to him, government has no intention of breaching its own commitment, stressing that discipline in ministerial appointments is central to its governance philosophy.
Commitment to lean governance
Mahama Ayariga reiterated that the cap on ministerial appointments reflects the administration’s broader agenda of efficiency, accountability, and responsible use of public resources.
He noted that government is mindful of public expectations and will not act in ways that undermine trust or contradict its stated principles.
Longstanding public debate
The size of government has remained a recurring issue in Ghana’s political discourse, with civil society groups and opposition parties consistently calling for smaller cabinets as a way of reducing public expenditure.
The Majority Leader’s assurance comes amid sustained public scrutiny and renewed parliamentary debate over the structure and cost of governance.
