Kwabena Agyepong, the former general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is the first candidate to formally submit his candidacy papers for the party’s flagbearer race in advance of the general election in 2028.
When Dr. Agyepong went to the party office in Accra on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, to file his application, he was surrounded by supporters and well-wishers.
For flagbearer filings, the NPP has established a clear window that formally commenced on July 29, 2025, and ends on August 28.
In order to choose a flagbearer to guide the party into the 2028 elections, the party leadership has also set January 31, 2026, as the date of its presidential primary.
In the meantime, the NPP has declared that additional groups of party officials and dignitaries will be added to the voter list for the Saturday, January 31, 2026, Presidential Primary.
The action is in line with a motion approved at the National Annual Delegates Conference on July 19, 2025, and Article 13(1)(11) of the NPP Constitution, according to a circular released by the Party’s Headquarters on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, and signed by Mr William Yamoah, Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee.
