Kwame Pianim Praises Mahama at Teachers’ Conference, Jokes NPP Could Lose Votes

Accra, Ghana — Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Pianim, has publicly praised President John Dramani Mahama for his approach to engaging teachers, joking that the president’s actions could cost the NPP significant political support.

Pianim made the remarks on Monday, January 5, 2026, while speaking at the 54th National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), attended by President Mahama.

“You Answer Teachers in Person”

Addressing the gathering, the respected economist and statesman commended Mahama for responding personally to the concerns of teachers rather than delegating the task to subordinates.

“Mr President, I’m happy and grateful you are here. Whenever the teachers call you, you don’t send just anybody,” Pianim said.

He contrasted Mahama’s approach with that of other leaders.

“Some people will not even send the Minister for Education; they would send somebody else,” he added.

Light-Hearted Warning to Mahama

Pianim then struck a humorous tone, suggesting that Mahama’s growing popularity among teachers could spell trouble for the opposition NPP.

“I don’t want to praise you too much,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.

He explained that the president’s actions since assuming office were already shifting political loyalties.

“The way you are going now, you could take about 80% of the teachers’ vote, and we don’t want that,” Pianim remarked.

Conference Draws Attention to Teacher–Government Relations

Pianim’s comments sparked reactions among delegates, highlighting the significance of teacher engagement in Ghana’s political landscape and the growing attention on Mahama’s leadership style.

The president’s presence at the conference was widely seen as a sign of commitment to dialogue with educators, a key voting bloc ahead of future elections.
