The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has expressed sympathy for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta following his detention in the United States in January 2026.
Ghana authorities made a formal extradition request linked to alleged corruption and procurement-related offences being investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
“I Feel Sorry for Him” – Pratt Jnr
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Pratt said he genuinely felt sorry for the former minister.
However, he stressed that health concerns should not prevent anyone from facing justice.
He argued that prostate-related conditions are common and manageable.
Prostate Issues Should Not Stop Trial
According to Pratt, many people with prostate conditions continue to work and live normal lives.
He said such conditions do not automatically prevent individuals from standing trial or serving sentences if required.
“What he has is prostate issues. Many people around the world have prostate problems. They work, they stand trial, and they live normal lives,” he stated.
“He Has Worsened His Own Case”
Pratt questioned why Ofori-Atta had not returned to Ghana to respond to the allegations.
He noted that several former government officials accused of wrongdoing are currently on bail and living freely while investigations continue.
“Why can’t he come and defend himself? From all indications, he has worsened his own case,” Pratt remarked.
He also questioned the sudden change in the former minister’s stance.
Arrest and Legal Developments
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Ken Ofori-Atta on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Washington, DC.
He is expected to appear before a U.S. immigration judge on January 20, 2026.
His legal team has described the arrest as an “ambush-style” operation.
Background to the Case
In 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor summoned Ofori-Atta for questioning.
He travelled to the United States on January 2, 2025, seeking medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic.
After missing several scheduled appearances, the OSP declared him wanted in February 2025.
In June 2025, INTERPOL issued a Red Notice against him for “Using Public Office for Profit.”
