Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally responded to Ghana’s request for diplomatic engagement over the investigation into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia.
According to the minister, Latvian authorities have agreed to receive a Ghanaian delegation in Riga on January 20, 2026, a development seen as a major step toward uncovering the truth and ensuring justice.
Ablakwa announced this update in a social media post on Saturday, December 27, describing the planned meeting as critical to advancing transparency and accountability in the case.
“On the matter of ongoing investigations and justice for Nana Agyei, I can confirm that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to my request and indicated that Latvian authorities will be ready to receive my delegation in Riga, Latvia, on January 20, 2026,” he stated.
The Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized that the government remains committed to regular public updates, stressing that openness is central to the process.
“I promised consistent updates in the interest of transparency, accountability, and justice, and I will continue to do so,” Ablakwa added.
Reaffirming the government’s stance on protecting citizens abroad, he noted that the Mahama administration remains resolute in defending the dignity and safety of all Ghanaians, regardless of their location.

“Every Ghanaian life matters, whether at home or abroad. We are prepared to do whatever it takes to protect the dignity of our citizens,” he said.
The diplomatic engagement follows growing public concern over the circumstances surrounding the death of 18-year-old Nana Agyei Ahyia, an Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, who was found dead on June 4, 2025.
While Latvian authorities initially reported that the student fell from the sixth floor of his apartment building, Nana Agyei’s family has disputed this account. They reference a voice recording sent days before his death, in which he alleged that he had been poisoned.
The upcoming meeting with Latvian officials is expected to deepen cooperation, push for transparency in the investigation, and may include representatives of Nana Agyei’s family as part of the Ghanaian delegation.
