Mahama holds talks with UN Secretary-General Guterres on African security, governance

President John Dramani Mahama on Friday held bilateral talks with António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the sidelines of the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

The meeting took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and focused on pressing security and governance challenges confronting the African continent.

Sahel security crisis dominates discussions

Central to the discussions was the worsening security situation in the Sahel region, where instability continues to threaten peace and development.

Attention was also given to the fragile conditions in countries belonging to the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES), with both leaders acknowledging the urgent need for coordinated international and regional responses.

President Mahama briefed the UN Secretary-General on his ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at mediating tensions and supporting peace-building efforts in the troubled region.

UN backs Mahama ahead of AU chairmanship

Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged President Mahama’s expected assumption of the African Union chairmanship in 2027, commending Ghana’s growing leadership role, particularly within West Africa.

He expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at restoring stability, strengthening democratic governance, and addressing emerging security threats across the continent.

Guterres further pledged the full support of the United Nations to President Mahama as he prepares for the leadership role within the continental body.

Symbolic gift marks diplomatic engagement

At the conclusion of the meeting, the UN Secretary-General presented President Mahama with a symbolic gift—a copy of the United Nations Charter translated into all six official languages of the UN.

The gesture underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation and shared responsibility in addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges.
