Majority Caucus video reignites claims Hajia Amina Adam was NDC’s preferred Ayawaso East candidate

Fresh controversy has erupted within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the emergence of a video showing members of the Majority Caucus openly endorsing Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, Mahama Naser Toure.

The footage has reignited claims from sections of Parliament and the Presidency that Hajia Amina Adam was the party’s preferred choice for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, despite losing the primaries.

The allegations were earlier pushed by the Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, who cited a statement by the Majority Caucus calling for the annulment of the February 7, 2026, primaries, as well as a directive from the Office of the President ordering the recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal.

Caucus members pledge support

In the newly surfaced video, Majority Caucus members are seen visiting Hajia Amina Adam at her residence to commiserate with her after the primaries.

During the visit, some MPs openly assured her of victory and expressed confidence that she would eventually return to Parliament.

“We are waiting for her in this 9th Parliament. We are waiting for her,” MP for Tema East, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, is heard saying.

“Insha Allah, she is coming,” a woman adds in the background, as Hajia Amina Adam wipes tears from her face.

The video has fueled speculation that influential figures within the party had already settled on her candidature, regardless of the outcome of the primaries.

Baba Jamal wins primaries amid controversy

Despite the claims, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed emerged as the winner of the NDC parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Final results show that Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes. Mohammed Ramne received 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azimdow garnered 45 votes, while Najib Sani obtained one vote.

More than 1,100 accredited delegates participated in the exercise, which was overshadowed by widespread allegations of inducement and vote-buying.

NDC acknowledges vote-buying claims

In a statement issued on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the NDC confirmed it had received reports of vote-buying involving some aspirants.

“The attention of the national executives of the NDC has been drawn to the widespread incidents of inducement and vote-buying allegedly perpetrated by senior aspirants at the primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency,” the statement said.

The party subsequently established a committee to investigate the allegations. While the committee acknowledged misconduct by some contenders, it stopped short of recommending a rerun, citing constitutional gaps and the tight deadline for submitting a candidate for the by-election.

By-election set for March 3

With the party declining to annul the primaries, Baba Jamal is expected to represent the NDC in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3.

However, the emergence of the Majority Caucus video has deepened internal tensions and raised fresh questions about fairness, internal democracy, and influence within the party’s decision-making structures.
