The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has rejected claims suggesting that Minority Members of Parliament intentionally abandoned their leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, during a recent visit to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to the lawmaker, reports of an alleged snub are inaccurate and misleading, insisting that the events surrounding the visit have been wrongly interpreted.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, February 9, 2026, Aidoo gave a detailed account of how the Minority Caucus’ visit to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer unfolded.
He explained that Minority MPs were officially notified on Sunday, February 1, 2026, through the caucus’ communication platform that they would pay a courtesy visit to Dr Bawumia on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., immediately after a caucus meeting scheduled for 8:00 a.m. at Parliament House.
According to Aidoo, the initiative came directly from Afenyo-Markin, who chaired the caucus meeting and communicated all arrangements, including the dress code, to members.
The Oforikrom MP narrated that he travelled from Kumasi to Accra in the early hours of Tuesday but encountered heavy traffic, causing him to arrive late at Parliament.
“By the time I got there, the meeting had ended and the bus had already left. As I was entering, the security officers were there, myself and a former Deputy Defence Minister and a few others—we were all late,” he explained.
Aidoo further disclosed that shortly after chairing the caucus meeting, Afenyo-Markin proceeded to the Speaker’s Conference Room for a leadership briefing before heading to Dr Bawumia’s residence.
“After Afenyo-Markin finished the caucus meeting, he went to the Speaker’s Conference Room to meet the leadership before joining the caucus at Dr Bawumia’s house,” he stated.
He emphasised that several MPs missed the arranged transportation due to late arrival and not because of any deliberate exclusion.
Responding to claims that the Minority Leader had been sidelined, Aidoo clarified that Afenyo-Markin later left Parliament and joined the MPs at Dr Bawumia’s residence, where they were already waiting for him.
“That was Afenyo’s own arrangement. What I knew was that we had a caucus meeting at 8:00 a.m. and by 10:00 a.m. we were to visit Dr Bawumia. He chaired the meeting, and from all indications, he initiated the visit himself,” he added.
