Former Ghana national team psychologist Dr Patrick Ofori has come out in strong defence of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, describing the recent criticism directed at him as unfair and overly simplistic.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Dr Ofori argued that the challenges facing the Black Stars cannot be blamed on the head coach alone. According to him, team performance is the result of collective effort, not the actions of one individual.
“Unfortunately, in our part of the world, even when there is a management committee in place, people often ignore it and focus their criticism solely on the coach,” Dr Ofori said.
He emphasised that modern football requires a well-structured technical and support team to help the head coach succeed.
Dr Ofori praised Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku for acknowledging past shortcomings in the national team’s technical setup and taking steps to correct them.
“When they realised that weaknesses in the technical appointments contributed to our failure to qualify for AFCON, they acted quickly by rebuilding the support team around the coach,” he explained.
According to Dr Ofori, this move clearly shows that blaming only the coach for poor results is misplaced.
He further called for additional reinforcements to the Black Stars’ backroom staff, noting that football at the highest level has become increasingly specialised.
“Football has evolved. Some teams now employ analysts whose sole responsibility is to study opposing defenders—their behaviour, concentration levels, and tactical patterns,” he noted.
Dr Ofori’s comments come at a time when the GFA is strengthening its technical department ahead of Ghana’s campaign toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He expressed confidence that a stronger and more comprehensive support system would ease the pressure on Otto Addo and significantly improve the Black Stars’ competitiveness on the global stage.
