Speaking on GBC’s Current Agenda on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Muslim stated that the NDC’s social democratic philosophy has resonated with Ghanaians.
“If you go back to even 1996 and do a comparative assessment of the ideological philosophies that have had majority rule in this country, you would see that it is largely the centre-left and leftist ideology that has had the majority in terms of the number of years they’ve been in the helm of affairs,’ Muslim said. ‘It speaks to something, it speaks to the generality of the citizens’ aspirations and where they find the most comfort.’
Ms Muslim added that even the NPP’s social programs are a testament to the effectiveness of centre-left ideologies. ‘You would see that many capitalist states are always bending themselves over to point out to specific social programmes to kind of mitigate against the effects of preaching unbridled capitalism,’ she said.
The NPP recently held a delegates’ congress, which Shamima Muslim described as a crucial step in rebuilding the party after their massive defeat in the 2024 elections. However, she stated that the party’s process has been criticized for lacking consultation.
“‘One of the major criticisms that has come from within the camp of the New Patriotic Party is that even the process towards this delegates’ congress or conference has not been consultative enough,’ Muslim observed.
Ms Muslim urged the NPP to learn from the NDC’s experiences and rebuild on the right foundations. ‘I think what is important is how they are able to rebuild and to rebuild on the right foundations,’ she said.”
