Why President Mahama Is Using Private Jets on Foreign Trips – Ablakwa Explains

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has clarified why President John Dramani Mahamahas recently been spotted travelling in private jets during his international engagements, including the World Governments Summit 2026 and his official visit to Zambia.

Speaking in Zambia during a meeting between President Mahama and members of the Ghanaian diaspora, Ablakwa explained that the aircraft in question were not privately hired by the Presidency. Instead, he said they were offered by host countries and global leaders who are keen on welcoming the Ghanaian President.

According to Ablakwa, the gesture highlights the respect, global appeal, and diplomatic influence President Mahama currently commands, with many world leaders eager to secure his presence at international events and bilateral engagements.

“There have been attempts to suggest that President Mahama is developing a preference for private jets. But this is a very different situation,” Ablakwa said. “It is a reflection of the honour, demand, and prestige he has brought to the office of President of the Republic of Ghana. He is highly sought after, and many world leaders are unwilling to take no for an answer.”

He further explained that due to the President’s packed international schedule, some countries take extraordinary measures to ensure his travel arrangements are smooth and efficient.

“They are not overly concerned about his calendar or travel logistics. Whatever it takes to transport him to their countries and onward to his next destination, they are willing to do it. That is why you may see him arriving on different aircraft,” Ablakwa stated.

The Foreign Affairs Minister urged Ghanaians to view the situation as a source of national pride, stressing that President Mahama has elevated Ghana’s image on the global stage.

“We should all be proud. President Mahama has restored dignity and prestige to the high office of President, and Ghana has reclaimed its rightful position within the international community,” he added.

During the Zambian visit, President Mahama held bilateral discussions with President Hakainde Hichilema, focusing on shared priorities such as diplomatic cooperation, trade and investment, and strengthened collaboration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
