Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum Shares Emotional 14-Year Journey to Parenthood

Former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has shared a deeply emotional account of his journey to fatherhood, revealing that it took 14 years after marriage for him and his wife to welcome their first child.

In an interview with Delay on January 24, 2026, Dr Adutwum reflected on how he met his wife while living in the United States, where both were working in the healthcare and education sectors.

According to him, he was in his early 30s and employed as a teacher, while his wife was working as a nurse. The couple got married just a year after meeting.

“I met my wife in America when I was in my early 30s. I was a teacher and she was a nurse. We got married a year after we met,” he recalled.

A Long and Painful Wait

After marriage, the couple faced years of disappointment as they struggled to conceive. Dr Adutwum admitted the situation took a heavy emotional toll on his wife.

“It took us a very long time to have a child. We waited 14 years after marriage before we were blessed with our own child,” he said.

He recounted heartbreaking moments in church when pastors would invite couples seeking children to step forward for prayers.

“Whenever the pastor called couples who wanted children, my wife would always go forward crying. Watching her in those moments was very painful because there was nothing I could do,” he explained.

Silent Pain and Personal Sacrifice

Despite his own emotional struggles, Dr Adutwum said he made a conscious effort not to burden his wife with his pain. At the time, he worked closely with children both as a teacher and a church worker.

“On Father’s Day, children would give me cards, and it always reminded me of what I didn’t have. Still, I tried to stay strong so my wife wouldn’t feel worse,” he said.

He added that working with children gave him a sense of purpose and fulfillment, even during the most difficult moments.

“I may not have had much, but I realised I was impacting many children. I built schools and supported young people, and that brought me some comfort,” he noted.

A Medical Setback and Loss of Hope

Dr Adutwum revealed that doctors later informed them that having a biological child might not be possible due to complications his wife developed after improper medical treatment.

“A doctor told us that my wife’s womb had been damaged and that we might never have children. That day was one of the hardest moments of our lives,” he disclosed.

Although he initially struggled to accept the diagnosis, he said he eventually surrendered the situation to God and continued praying.

An Unexpected Breakthrough

Their miracle came unexpectedly after they decided to host a child who needed accommodation in the United States.

“I came across a child online who needed someone to host him. He was the only child of his parents, and when I told my wife, she agreed,” he explained.

Remarkably, Dr Adutwum said that during the first year the child stayed with them, his wife became pregnant.

“That was when my wife got pregnant. The child became a great help to us, and eventually, my wife gave birth to a son,” he shared.
