In a powerful display of unity and solidarity, some of Ghana’s top celebrities have taken to their Twitter pages to speak out against recent police arrests and reports of brutality on protestors at the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, which took place today, September 21, 2023.
Among these vocal celebrities are Sarkodie, Wendy Shay, Black Sherif, and a few others who are using their influence to shed light on the situation and call for justice.
Earlier this week, the Ghanaian Police arrested a total of 49 suspects in connection with an unlawful assembly and a violation of the Public Order Act.
The arrests took place in the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area.
According to a statement issued by the Police Service in Accra, these arrests came as a result of the organizers of the Democracy Hub group disregarding a court order that sought to prohibit them from embarking on a planned demonstration near the Jubilee House from September 21st to September 23rd, 2023.
The police clarified that their disagreement with the organizers was primarily related to the chosen venue, as the Jubilee House is considered a security zone.
They reiterated their commitment to providing security for demonstrations but urged the general public to disregard any invitation to participate in unlawful demonstrations until the court’s determination of the matter on September 26, 2023.
The arrests and reports of brutality by protestors have sparked outrage on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing their concern over the handling of the situation by the authorities.
